Code 39 - Full ASCII Code 39 was developed in 1974 by David Allais and Raymond Stevens, then with Interface Mechanisms Inc. (now Intermec Corporation). It was the first barcode symbology to use alphabetic characters in addition to numeric digits. This is 3 of 9 (sometimes called 'code 39'), a widely used barcode standard that includes capital letters, numbers, and several symbols. This is not the barcode for UPC's (universal price codes) found on products at the store. However, most kinds of barcode scanners will recognize 3 of 9 just fine. Full ASCII Standard Code 39 contains only 43 characters (0-9, A-Z, $, /,%, +). Code 39 can be extended to an 128 character symbology (full ASCII) by combining one of the special characters ($, /,%, +) with a letter (A-Z) to form the characters that are not present in the standard Code 39 symbology. Code 39 Extended Barcode

Extended Code 39 is derived from Code 39 and supports all ASCII characters. Linear symbology encode data with double character encoding like Character’s” is encoded “+A”. Extended Code 39 easily encode tabs, lower case (a to z), digits (0-9), symbols (+, $, %, /,*, &, #,!, (), -), returns, punctuations as per Code 39 font and also known as Code 39 Full ACSII .
